Is a Bosphorus dinner cruise worth it? An honest answer from the people who run one

What you actually get for €24.6

Yes, for most visitors a Bosphorus dinner cruise is worth it, on one condition: you want an evening out, not a quiet sightseeing boat. For €24.6 per person you get a three-course Turkish dinner, an eight-act live show, unlimited soft drinks and about three hours on the water covering the Golden Horn and both shores of the Bosphorus after dark. Alcohol and hotel transfer are optional paid add-ons. Below is what that price buys, who it suits, who it does not, and why the booking rules make it a low-risk choice.

Boarding at Cibali Pier on the Golden Horn opens at 20:00. When you reach your table, ten cold mezes are already on it, served family style: the kind of spread a Turkish family puts out for guests, with dips, olives, stuffed vine leaves and salads to share. A warm börek follows once we are under way.

The main course is chosen per guest at the table: grilled salmon, sea bass, chicken skewer or beef skewer, each with seasonal salad and garnish. Vegetarians get a platter of falafel, roasted potatoes, bulgur pilaf, stewed vegetables and onion rings; ask when you book or tell your waiter. The show runs through the evening in eight acts, and the order can change from night to night. It moves through belly dance, a whirling dervish ceremony, Turkish Romani dance, Caucasian dance with the knife show, Turkish folk dances, a rhythm show on drums and live violin. The eighth act is the after-party: a DJ set and the dance floor open until we tie up again.

Between the acts the boat does the sightseeing. We leave the Golden Horn under three bridges, round Sarayburnu below Topkapı Palace, go up the European shore past Dolmabahçe Palace, Çırağan Palace and Ortaköy Mosque, pass under the Bosphorus Bridge, continue to Bebek and Rumeli Fortress, and turn near the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. We come back down the Asian shore past Anadolu Fortress, Beylerbeyi Palace, Kuzguncuk and Üsküdar, pass Maiden's Tower and return into the Golden Horn. The route may vary with weather and sea conditions. Departure is 21:00; we are back at Cibali Pier between 23:45 and 00:00.

What it costs all-in with the add-ons

The cruise price is the whole bill if you drink soft drinks and make your own way to the pier. Three optional add-ons can change the total, and all of them are paid on the boat together with the cruise, in cash (euro, lira or dollars) or by card.

• Unlimited drinks package, €15 per adult. An open bar for the whole evening: beer, rakı, vodka, gin, and red and white wine, for guests aged 18 and over. Imported drinks such as whisky, tequila and champagne, and cocktails, are available at the bar at an extra charge. It is not a glass count. If you plan to drink through dinner and the after-party, it is the simple option; if you want one drink or none, skip it and order from the bar. We go into detail in our guide to the drinks package.
• Hotel transfer, €5 per person. Pickup from your hotel before boarding and drop-off after we return, in the central zones from Sultanahmet and Fatih to Taksim, Beşiktaş and Ortaköy. Children aged 0 to 3 ride free. Same-day requests after 18:30 depend on vehicle availability. The alternative is the T5 tram, which stops at Cibali a short walk from the pier; our directions page covers every route.
• Romantic table, €15 per booking. Flowers and candles at your table. One charge for the table, not per person.

Children pay less. Ages 0 to 3 cruise free and ride the transfer free. Ages 4 to 9 get €5 off the cruise price and pay the full €5 for transfer. From age 10 the cruise price is the adult price.

So a couple who take the drinks package and the transfer pay the cruise price twice, the drinks package twice and the transfer twice, and nothing else. There is no service charge, no booking fee and no surprise on the boat: the price you see on our package page is the price you pay.

How it compares with a Bosphorus-view restaurant

The fairest comparison is not with a sightseeing boat but with dinner at a waterfront restaurant on land, because that is the other way to eat with the Bosphorus in front of you. We will not name restaurants or invent their prices. What we can say, from years of guests telling us what they paid elsewhere, is that a dinner for one with a starter, a main and a soft drink at a Bosphorus-view restaurant in the central districts typically costs more than the cruise for the meal alone.

The restaurant gives you a fixed view of one stretch of water and a menu you order from. The cruise gives you a set menu, a view that changes for three hours, and a show. If you want to linger over a la carte food and talk quietly, the restaurant wins. If you want the meal to be part of a bigger evening, the cruise wins on price and on what happens around the table.

Who the cruise is for

Couples. The most common booking. A table by the window, the palaces lit up on both shores, dinner and a dance floor at the end. The romantic table add-on is popular for anniversaries and birthdays; tell us when you book and we will place the table well.

Families. Children like the drums, the dervish and the knife dance, and the meze spread means there is always something on the table a fussy eater will accept. The salon is enclosed and heated or cooled, so a winter evening is not a problem.

Groups and friends. A birthday, a team night, a group of friends on a city break. We seat groups together, the drinks package removes the bill-splitting, and the after-party gives the evening an ending nobody has to plan.

First-time visitors. If you have three or four nights in Istanbul, one evening on the water shows you the shape of the city faster than any other single activity: where the Golden Horn meets the Bosphorus, where Europe faces Asia, which palace is which.

Solo travelers. You will not be the only one; a good share of our guests come on their own. Dinner, the show and the after-party give the evening a structure, which is exactly what a first solo night in a big city often lacks.

Who should skip it

We would rather you read this section than book and be disappointed.

If you want a quiet boat. This is a dinner show. There are drums, a belly dancer, a violin and a DJ, and by the last hour much of the salon is on the dance floor. The open decks at the bow and stern are quieter and you can step out whenever you like, but the evening as a whole is lively. If your idea of the Bosphorus at night is silence and water, book something else.

If you want an open-deck daylight sightseeing trip. The dinner cruise departs at 21:00. You see the city lit up, not in daylight, and you see it from a table through panoramic windows, stepping out onto the open deck when you choose. If you dislike shows. A large part of the evening is about the performers. If a whirling dervish ceremony and a folk dance medley sound like something you would sit through rather than watch, the cruise is not good value for you, whatever the price.

If you need a specific dietary program. We handle vegetarian guests with a dedicated platter and can leave items off, but the dinner is a set menu. Guests with strict requirements should ask on WhatsApp before booking rather than hope for the best.

Why the booking rules take the risk out of it

Worth it also means low risk if plans change, and this is where the cruise is unusual. There is no prepayment and no deposit. You book on WhatsApp or through the form on our site, receive a confirmation, a map pin for Cibali Pier and a reminder on WhatsApp, and pay on the boat.

Cancellation is free up to two hours before departure, which means until 19:00 on the day. If it pours, if a child gets sick, if your flight lands late, you send one message and owe nothing. Same-day bookings are accepted until 21:00, so you can also decide at lunchtime, look at the sky, and book in the afternoon.

In practice you can hold a table for an evening you are not sure about and only pay once you are sitting down with the mezes in front of you.

Our honest verdict

For a couple, a family, a group or a first-time visitor who wants an evening out with a view, dinner and a show for €24.6 per person, with nothing to pay until you are on board and free cancellation until 19:00, the answer is yes. The meal alone typically costs more at a Bosphorus-view restaurant on land, and the restaurant does not move.
